Universal Shaft Of Water Pump

The universal shaft of the water pump, as a key transmission component in the fluid conveying system, is a mechanical device that can achieve power transmission when the two axis lines do not coincide. This innovative design solves the transmission problem of traditional rigid couplings when the axis is offset, greatly expanding the application scope and installation flexibility of water pump systems.

In the water pump system, the cardan shaft is mainly used to connect the motor and the pump body, compensating for axis deviation caused by installation errors, foundation settlement, or thermal deformation. Compared with traditional couplings, universal joints allow for greater angular deviation and axial displacement, while effectively reducing vibration transmission and extending equipment service life.

Modern water pump universal shafts are designed with precision engineering and manufactured with high-quality materials. Their typical structure includes the following key components:

  1. Cross shaft assembly: forged from high-strength alloy steel, subjected to precision heat treatment and grinding processing, with a surface hardness typically reaching HRC58-62. The four necks of the cross shaft are equipped with wear-resistant bearings, which can withstand radial and axial composite loads.

  2. Universal joint fork: Made of high-quality carbon steel or alloy steel, with precision machining to ensure precise fit with the cross shaft. Fork heads are usually designed with flange or spline interfaces for easy connection with water pumps and drive devices.

  3. Sealing system: Adopting a multi-layer sealing structure, including rubber oil seals, labyrinth seals, and dust covers, effectively preventing lubricant leakage and pollutant entry.

  4. Balance device: The high-speed universal joint is equipped with dynamic balance weights to ensure smooth operation within the speed range of 1500-3000rpm, with vibration values controlled below 2.5mm/s.

The working principle of the universal joint coupling of the water pump is based on spatial geometric kinematics. When the driving shaft rotates, the motion is transmitted to the driven shaft through the cross shaft, and even if there is an angle deviation between the two shafts, a constant speed ratio can be maintained (dual universal joint system) or an approximately constant speed ratio can be maintained (single universal joint system). Modern design optimizes joint geometry parameters and uses special materials to control speed fluctuations within ± 1%, meeting the requirements of precision transmission.

When selecting, the following key parameters should be considered:

  1. Torque capacity: Calculate peak torque and increase safety factor by 30%

  2. Speed range: Ensure that the working speed is within 80% of the rated value

  3. Offset angle: The static angle shall not exceed 70% of the rated value

  4. Environmental conditions: Consider the effects of temperature, humidity, and corrosive media

  5. Maintenance requirements: Evaluate lubrication cycle and ease of replacement of vulnerable parts
